Artists wishing to create new electronic artwork usually begin in a 
Vector Graphics program like Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw, then 
import their work into a Raster Graphics program such as PhotoShop.  

Unfortunately, powerful drawing programs such as Illustrator and Corel 
are VERY expensive commercial programs.  Inkscape however is a FREE 
open-source program designed to compete directly with these commercial 
programs.  Inkscape has a large user support base, and many new artists
who have not already invested in one of the large commercial packages 
are choosing to use Inkscape instead.
