ZoneAlarm (ver 7.0.483.000) Free for personal use ZoneAlarm is an outstanding Software Aplication-level Firewall (this firewall blocks programs rather than blocking Ports). It is recommended that you use an application-level software firewall even if you have a hardware firewall, because the software firewall can prevent malicious applications from "calling home" -FROM- your PC. This is a self-extracting EXE file. During setup you will be asked if you want the "Zone Alarm Security Suite" version. The "Zone Alarm Security Suite" version is NOT freeware, so you should select the regular version (i.e., the standard freeware Firewall software). NOTE: This is the last version compatible with Windows 2000. WARNING: The ZoneAlarm product works so well, that people were not upgrading. Naturally, this was unpleasant news to their sales staff, so as of 15 July 2009, they disabled the Verisign Root Certificate for VSINIT.DLL, so that version 6.x will no longer function. To fix this problem, first boot into Windows "Safe Mode" (F8), and delete the "c:\Windows\System32\vsinit.dll" (or on some systems, the "c:\Winnt\System32\vsinit.dll") file. Next delete the Zone Alarm folder in "c:\Program Files". Reboot the computer and then install this version of Zone Alarm 7. ============================== Normally I would not offer "Free" software that was good only for non-business use, as I feel small/home businesses shouldn't be forced into owning two computers (one for work and one for "fun"). However in the case of Internet Firewall software, this kind of liscensing just doesn't make any sense. Does selling your tacky sovenier on Ebay constitute doing business? And what if you are just connecting to your office from home in order to check on your business email? Even worse, what if you have spyware on your computer that is generating business for someone you don't even know you are generating business for? Do data packets somehow have different significance to a firewall, and therefore fall into the same catagory as if using a "for home use only" paint program to create your companies logo? For this and other reasons, I have decided to offer an older version of ZoneAlarm (version 2.6.362) as a compromise. You may feel more comfortable using an older (and smaller) version of the product in a situation that may feel questionable. This version of ZoneAlarm is the last version to use the old-style interface. Please note that even though this is an older version, it is still EXTREMELY effective as a Firewall (many of the changes in the new version are merely the additions of convenience features for novice Firewall administrators). file = zonalm26zla.zip
