MAME (ver 0.169) Freeware MAME originally stood for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator, but it now also incorporates MESS (Multi Emulator Super System), which emulates old home computers/consoles. MAME reads computer code that was originally stored on ROM (Read Only Memory) chips or Tape Cassettes. The primary purpose of MAME is to play old arcade games that were inside those cabinets you found at Video Game parlors. MAME is only a hardware emulator which allows the game run inside your PC. You have to add the ROM/Tape images of the computer code in order to actually play a game. Unlike most other Windows software, this program does NOT have an installer. Simply extract the ZIP file to a location on your Hard Drive and run the executable. Be aware that MAME launches from a Windows Command Line. Add your ROM images to the folder called "roms" (leave your ROM images Zipped), and any other supplementary files to their appropriate directories. You may also need to configure MAME to your specific hardware situation of joystick, Video card, sound card, etc., (which ideally should include an X-Arcade Tankstick). TIP: There are several Internet sources that contain Cabinet pictures, Marquee pictures, Control Panel pictures, and etc., that you can place in the appropriate folder in your MAME program. One good source is: http://www.progettosnaps.net/ NOTE: This is the last Win2k version.
