Most of the Free Server programs included here are excellent choices, although purchasing some commercial Servers may be a better choice in certain circumstances (e.g. Simple DNS Plus for DNS and DNews for NNTP). An important advantage of using the Free Server programs included here is that they are "dedicated" (i.e., they only handle one Protocol). Software designers can build better software if they only have one protocol to focus upon. Dedicated software is also less vulnerable to attackers, as there are less avenues for attack than with multi-protocol server software.
Windows 2000 Professional already comes with an NT "service" based TelNet host (port 23), which you can activate by opening the 'Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services'
utility, and selecting 'Telnet'
. Windows 2000 also ships with installable basic mini-Servers for the record querying protocols: CharGen (port 19), Daytime (port 13), Discard (port 9), Echo (port 7), and QOTD (port 17). To install the software (all the servers are bundled), open the 'Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs - Add/Remove Windows Components'
utility and select 'Networking Services - Simple TCP/IP Services'
(you may be asked to insert the installation disk). Note that you can alter the quotes for the QOTD [Quote Of The Day] by editing the text file "quotes", which will have been placed in the directory "C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc".
It is crucial that any Host be properly and completely configured before being placed into operation!
NOTES:
The Email system uses the Protocols SMTP for uploading, POP or IMAP for regular downloading, and Distribute for subscription downloading.
Many of the Protocols use such low upload bandwidth that they are suitable to install on a "Home ISP" connection.
